The Jackson Chapter of the National Honor Society was established May 15, 1947 by Melba Thornton, then Principal of Jackson High School. The purpose of the National Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools. Its membership is an honor bestowed upon the student. Selection is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service.  Any junior or senior at Jackson High School who has a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above is eligible for application.

Selection into the National Honor Society is an honor, and NHS is more than a GPA club. Those students selected have met the following criteria:

demonstrates leadership in school or community activities
exemplifies a positive attitude
takes academic initiative
works well with others
shows a willingness to assume difficult or inconspicuous responsibilities
upholds principles of morality and ethics
demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and reliability.

Members of the Jackson High School Chapter of the National Honor Society have been chosen by a faculty panel because of effective demonstration of the four qualities held in high esteem by the society.
